This week I’m giving a little introduction to a local charity: the Plymouth Deaf Childrens Society. The BSL Society have been in regular contact with their team, and last April the committee raised a wonderful £361 during our 151 challenge! This is obviously a charity very close to the BSL Society, so I wanted to introduce our members to the brilliant work they do in the community.
What They Do
PDCS work throughout the year to provide fun social events and activities for d/Deaf children and their families within Plymouth and the surrounding area. These not only provide d/Deaf and hearing impaired children with a safe space to communicate and make friends, but also creates a support network for their family.
As well as these sessions, monthly coffee mornings allow families to share their experiences and work to educate them on new advancements in technology, research, and general advice and support.
PDCS runs entirely on donations and fundraisers, and their management team are all volunteers who either have hearing loss, are experienced in working with d/Deaf children, or have young people in their family who have a hearing impairment.
Get Involved
PDCS are always welcoming volunteers to help run their events. If you have experience communicating with young people and you plan to go into a field where you work closely with children, then this could be a perfect opportunity for you to help out in the local community and gain some valuable skills and experience. As you can see, PDCS provides a crucial support network for d/Deaf children and their families, and it’s so important that their work continues. The BSL society hopes to organise even more fundraisers in the future to help spread more awareness and raise important funds that can help PDCS continue their amazing work!
